Brakes / Shock Absorbers, Kettering - Headlands Garage

Brakes

In a car, the brakes use friction to bring the wheels to a stop. The braking systems on the front and back are normally different; the front brakes are also generally more powerful.

The brakes are controlled by a hydraulic system that pushes the brake fluid through a series of pipes; when the brake pedal is pressed, it forces the fluid through the system, pressing the brake pad against the wheel.

The front brake works using a calliper system - the brake disc is pinched between the two pads, which are pushed inwards by two pipes filled with brake fluid.

The front brake works using a calliper system - the brake disc is pinched between the two pads, which are pushed inwards by two pipes filled with brake fluid.

Problems with the brakes can occur when the pads become worn down and allow the wheels to slip; if this occurs, the pads will need replacing. There can also be problems with the brake fluid; if there is a leak in one of the pipes then the pressure can't build up, and the brakes can fail.

If the brake pads become very worn, there can also be problems with the brake disc; these wear at a slower rate but if the pads wear down, the disc can also suffer. This is much more costly to repair; it's worth ensuring your brake pads are fully working to avoid disc damage.

Shock Absorbers

Car suspension uses a combination of hydraulics and springs to act as shock absorbers.

Suspension is important as it ensures that the driver and passengers don't feel all the bumps in the road by damping vibrations in the wheels, and also helps prevent damage to the car on more extreme surfaces.

The suspension is connected to the wheel mount, the part which also connects the wheel to the car's chassis. The driveshaft passes through this section to transfer rotation to the wheel itself.

This works by forcing oil through small gaps in a sealed chamber: oil is a thick fluid, and it takes a lot of force to do this, meaning that this takes a lot of the force out of the bump's impact.

The shock absorbers attach the suspension to the main frame of the car.

Any remaining vibrations are passed through these to the car and it's passengers.
